Once the domain of science fiction, AI is now a pervasive technology integrated into countless aspects of daily life, from search engine algorithms to autonomous vehicles. Its rapid development is driven by advancements in computational power, the availability of vast datasets, and the refinement of machine learning techniques, positioning AI as a transformative force in the 21st century.

B. At its core, modern AI is largely powered by machine learning, a subset of AI where systems learn and improve from experience without being explicitly programmed. Neural networks, inspired by the structure of the human brain, are a key component of this, allowing machines to recognise complex patterns in data. This has enabled breakthroughs in areas like natural language processing, which allows us to interact with voice assistants, and computer vision, which is crucial for facial recognition and medical image analysis.

C. The applications of AI are expanding at an unprecedented rate. In healthcare, AI algorithms can analyse medical scans to detect diseases like cancer with remarkable accuracy, often surpassing human capabilities. The finance industry uses AI for fraud detection and algorithmic trading, while the retail sector employs it for personalised recommendations and supply chain optimisation. These applications demonstrate AI''s potential to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and innovation across virtually every industry.

D. Despite its immense potential, the rise of AI also presents significant ethical and social challenges. Concerns include the potential for widespread job displacement due to automation, the perpetuation of biases embedded in training data, and issues surrounding data privacy and surveillance. Ensuring that AI is developed and deployed responsibly is a critical challenge for technologists, policymakers, and society as a whole, requiring a focus on transparency, fairness, and human oversight.
