Circular Fashion

A. Circular fashion is an application of the principles of the circular economy to the clothing industry, representing a radical departure from the dominant "fast fashion" model. It aims to create a closed-loop system where clothes are designed, produced, used, and then circulated for as long as possible before being safely returned to the biosphere or recycled into new materials. The goal is to design out waste and pollution from the outset and to regenerate natural systems, creating a more sustainable and ethical fashion industry.

B. The concept of circular fashion is built on several key principles. Firstly, it involves designing for durability and longevity, creating high-quality garments that are made to last. It also emphasizes designing for disassembly and recyclability, using materials and construction techniques that make it easy to separate components and recycle them at the end of the garment''s life. The use of safe, renewable, and recyclable materials, such as organic fibres or innovative recycled textiles, is also crucial.

C. Circularity also involves new business models that shift the focus from selling products to providing services. This includes rental and subscription models, where consumers can access a rotating wardrobe without owning the clothes. It also promotes the importance of repair, encouraging consumers and brands to mend garments rather than discard them. The resale of second-hand clothing is another vital component of keeping garments in use for longer.

D. Implementing a circular fashion system requires a collective effort from all stakeholders. Brands need to redesign their products and business models. Consumers need to shift their mindset from a disposable view of clothing to one that values longevity and care. Policymakers can support the transition through regulations that encourage recycling and penalise waste. While the transition is complex, circular fashion offers a compelling vision for an industry that is creative and profitable without causing harm to people or the planet.
